After an overnight stay in Madrid, we came by bus to Salamanca. Situated in the Castille y Leon region of Spain, Salamanca is considered to be the seat of 'Pure' Spanish language. Our studies take up most of the day, focusing equally on conversation and grammar. After 'siesta' each day we are taking short excursions within the region. On the itinerary are things like visiting the 'Joselito' Iberican jamon factory, vineyards, cheese factories and tapas bars, as well as Sevillanas dance lessons, lectures, menu planning and produce selection sessions with local restaurateurs, festivals, nature reserves, archaeological sites, museums etc.....
Salamanca is the home of the worlds second oldest university (est 1218), has a fluctuating population of 160 000 (40,000 are students!) is a UNESCO heritage listed city, and features Renaissance architecture all made out of beautiful stone that looks like gold in the sun light.
Its also cold, did I mention that?
Not all the participants have arrived yet, the two Russians are having visa issues. We are all living in an old building in the heart of the city. One whole floor has been converted to accommodate us. We have our own rooms, virtually a bath room each, communal living and dining, and all our food is cooked for us by a team of diligent Senoritas.
We had an introductory meeting at our hotel yesterday, and the director of the program pulled me aside afterwards and explained that I was having the great privilege of working at Arzak, apparently the Head Chef is considered the best in Spain. She said he is the 'Godfather' of Spanish cuisine, and is anticipating my arrival. I feel honoured beyond words.
There is also unconfirmed reports that a trip to El Bulli is on the cards. Hope so.
Hasta Luego
